Ornamental Cabbage - August Virtual Sketch Date

Ornamental Cabbage, originally uploaded by nicquiltz.

I decided to join the fun on the Virtual Sketch Date blog after seeing some of the fabulous efforts from previous months. I began with a watercolour wash in soft grey blues for the ornamental cabbage, which was later torn up and collaged onto a soft watercolour background. Then I began to draw back into the collage with black and white charcoal pencils to achieve the tones and textures of the cabbage leaves. Some linear components were added to the background with coloured ink.

It was a fun exercise - I think I'll be back for another virtual sketch date next month.

Hi Nic,
This feels like a quilted piece! I want to wrap up in it!
I can envision an applique quilt...

Isn't doing the Virtual Sketch Date fun?
I am always amazed at how diverse the results are.

Wow, interesting technique. I do colage myself but did not think of using it this time. Love the final effect

Wow, I love when someone uses a completely different approach. This is wonderful and yet another color scheme. The line work really adds some zing. Nicely done.

Hi Nic, I agree with Leslie this does look like a quilted piece, in fact I had to look twice. I love mixed media pieces. I think most people don't appreciate the time and effort involved in making the choices. Great work..love how it turned out!

Lovely--this interpretation is so =different from anything else. The cabbage is wonderful, the leaf shapes and differences in each leak' and overall, it has a soft, ethereal quality.

This was a surprise! So great to see a unique piece - I love the colours you've used and the added textures and lines. (It would be fabulous to have a cabbage quilt to wrap up in as Leslie suggests!)

Your quilts and for that matter, art work, are wonderful. Is the cabbage fabric treated in any way? I love "domestic bliss" quilt work as well.
